How Vacations Can Help With Grief

Wherever you are in the grieving process, you may want to consider taking a break. While you can’t just walk away from your loss or the resultant pain, it could be that a change in your routine may help work through some of the darker days and bring you back to a place of joy.

  • SHED THE STRESS: If you have been dealing with stress for a while, then it may be time to disengage and find a destination where you simply “are.” A place where others take care of you and you can get off the roller coaster for a while. A spa or cruise would be a great choice, or an all-inclusive resort.

  • CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY: Sometimes after we lose a loved one, we begin to feel that we are doing what we should do, what is expected, and not what we want or need to do. If you find yourself experiencing this emotion, then you might benefit from a time of reflection on what you would rather be doing right now. Take some time to think about it and do it. You may not have to leave home, but would benefit from a stay-cation. There is no requirement to “go somewhere” or “spend money”. You might enjoy hiding the car in the garage or a local parking lot, shutting off the phone, and reading a good book for a few days, or even digging out that craft that has been waiting for you to find time. Enjoy the foods you love, drink your favorite beverages, and engage all your senses in things you enjoy for a few days or weeks. On the other hand, if you have always wanted to visit the Grand Canyon or go “workamping” (a new trend where farms and ranches open their land for camping in exchange for help on the property), or see the Northern Lights, then this is a good time to do that. Planning your trip will soothe your mind and you can find the joy of checking something off your own lists.

  • INTENTIONALLY MOVE TO ANOTHER POINT IN THE GRIEF PROCESS: While much of the emotion that envelopes you is involuntary, it is possible to put yourself in a place where you can encourage another emotion. For instance, if you are dealing with sadness, you may find joy in revisiting a location which meant a great deal to you and your loved one. If you choose to do this, you should be willing to experience the emotions that will be evoked and allow time to process them. You may want to follow a day spent at a favorite place with some quiet time. Others may benefit from going directly into a social situation, such as dinner with a friend.

Losing a loved one is not something that a few days will cure. Months or years may not bring peace, but if you are having difficulty moving beyond a certain point, consider taking a vacation. Sometimes, just the simple act of changing your life for a few days or weeks can help immensely.
