Obituary for Joseph Gill Matranga

14 October 1959 – 25 July 2019

Gill was the first of five children of the union between Joseph M. Matranga and Eleta (Ootie) Gill Matranga. He was a native of Mobile and died in his home on Dauphin Island. Joe and Ootie predeceased Gill as did his younger brother, John and
Aunt, Louise Mitchell. He is survived by his brothers Michael of Clearwater Florida and Gregory of Mobile and his sister, Lee Ann of Arvada, Colorado and numerous nephews and nieces. Gill was educated at St. Ignatius Catholic School, McGill-Toolen Catholic High School and St. Stanislaus boarding school in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
For 35 years, Gill worked as a petroleum landman who was befriended and highly respected by his peers. He was a landman’s landman. He dealt with the landowners fairly and politely and paid promptly their signing bonus. When a prospect ended, Gill was hired by another prospector before he packed up to leave. He was deeply devoted to his spirited family, and to his Aunt Mary Jo and Uncle D. Without hesitation and undaunted by the certainty of major surgery, he stepped forward to donate a kidney to his seriously ill younger brother John when the doctors told him he was an excellent donor for a transplant to John.
Gill has numerous close friends some of whom are:
Ben Spafford who was as close as a brother. Fred Pollman, Robert Wagner, Gary Lewis and his wife Sheryl, Shannon (Shanman), Renee Bailin, Rick Skipper, Dale Munday, Harris and Prissy Long, Gamewell North, Alec Bailey, and dearest friend Allison Olivia DuBose. Any friend omitted is the fault of his Uncle D, who wrote this obituary and for that omission please accept his profound apology.
Gill had a great love for animals, both wild and domestic. He was rarely seen without his beloved Belgian Malinois, Hambone, that was about to be put down for failing to qualify for police service. Gill rescued, and named, Hambone who remained his constant companion for the last ten years.
A memorial Mass will be offered at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Wednesday, 14 August 2019 at 2:00 p.m. with interment of ashes at Magnolia Cemetery.
